Wireless Access with Smart Antennas and SDMA

چکیده

One of the most important challenges with respect to wireless access is the limited capacity of the air interface which is due to the fact that the available transmission bandwidth is finite. Since the number of wireless subscribers is still growing rapidly and the desire for higher data rates is rising – partially due to an ever growing popularity of the Internet – a more efficient use of frequency resources is inevitable to meet future capacity needs. Space Division Multiple Access (SDMA) can be used to multiply the capacity given by conventional multiple access techniques such as FDMA, TDMA or CDMA. However, the actual capacity gain which can be achieved with SDMA is highly dependent on the SDMA channel assignment and on the considered scenario (propagation, user distribution, traffic, mobility). Therefore in this paper several channel assignment strategies for SDMA systems are discussed and the problem of modeling different scenarios is addressed. Additionally some simulation results on the performance of SDMA systems are presented.

An SDMA-based MAC protocol for wireless ad hoc networks with smart antennas

A wireless ad hoc network consists of a set of wireless devices. The wireless devices are capable of communicating with each other without the assistance of base stations. Space Division Multiple Access (SDMA) is a new technology designed to optimize the performance of current and future mobile communication systems. In this paper, an SDMA-based MAC protocol (S-MAC) for wireless ad hoc networks...

Adaptive Channel Allocation in OFDM/SDMA Wireless LANs with Limited Transceiver Resources

Smart antennas increase capacity of wireless systems by allowing channel reuse by several users in the same cell through space division multiple access (SDMA). Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) creates additional challenges in beam-forming when the beams that can be formed are limited due to transceiver unit limitations. We investigate the impact of smart antennas on channel all...

Smart-antenna operation for indoor wireless local-area networks using OFDM

This paper reports link-level Monte Carlo simulations for a system that is compatible with the physical layer of the 5-GHz IEEE 802.11a wireless-local-area network and utilizes an adaptive antenna array at the access point for single-user smart-antenna operation, as well as for space-division multiple access (SDMA). For the spatial indoor radio propagation channel, complex impulse-response reco...
